Colour
The breed is found in solid colours ,sable and flowered. These include shades of light brown, red and black and dilute versions eg: blue is a dilute of black.
Grooming
Care is needed in our hot climate, especially around the characteristic wrinkles of the breed. Check for ticks in these skin folds, and make sure the close-set tail of some pups is clean and dry and free of flea dirt. Apart from that, brushing once a week is plenty. We also recommend the use of spot on flea control like Advocate.
History
The breed was developed from a number of other breeds, including the Chow Chow (from where it gets its blue tongue). They were nearly extinct by the 1970s, but have made a remarkable comeback.
Positives
The breed is suited to the Australian climate, as they enjoy hot weather. They are happy to be an indoor dog despite their size, and will be a loyal household member when raised with a family.
Negatives
This particular breed is known as a very stubborn dog and difficult to train. Therefore owners MUST train their dog at an early age with kind assertive methods, such as those taught at local community dog training clubs.
